In Cholula they got the idea of starting En Bici Sin Edad during a trip to Europe filming a documentary about cycling culture.
In the summer of 2015 we took a long bike ride as part of a
film project on cycling culture in different countries. The
trip took us to Denmark where we had the opportunity to
meet Ole Kassow. Not only did we have a good interview
for the documentary, we also got really close to Cycling
Without Age and had the chance to accompany Ole,
Thorkild and Eila on a trishaw ride to mark the second
anniversary of Cycling Without Age.
That experience made it very clear to us that a project
of this nature had great positive impact to the lives of
others. We started considering the possibility of joining
the movement to benefit even more elderly people, or
people with limited mobility, by taking the project to
Mexico.
At that time we also came to the conclusion that it
would only be financially feasible if we could build the
tricycles locally; similar to the original models used by
Cycling Without Age in Copenhagen. We already had
experience with modifying and adapting a cargo tricycle
for an educational project to promote the use of the
bicycle in Cholula.
Upon our return, we set about exploring the possibilities
along with our young blacksmith friend, Daniel Centeno,
who with his creativity and dedication managed to
transform four local cargo tricycles into the Mexican
version of Cycling Without Age trishaws. Daniel was
joined by Malena Jimenez who contributed with the
design and manufacture of the red canopies for the
trishaws. Thus, by using creativity to overcome our
obstacles, we started the first Cycling Without Age
fleet in our country.
In Mexico, projects such as Cycling Without Age give
us the opportunity to reinforce the social fabric and to
open up new ways of meeting new people. If we look
inwards, we can all find those elements of kindness
and compassion that will inspire us to take actions that
benefit others.

En 2015, hicimos un viaje en bicicleta como parte de un
proyecto de cine documental sobre la cultura ciclista en
distintos países. Este viaje nos condujo a Dinamarca,
donde conocimos a Ole Kassow. Además de tener una
buena entrevista para el documental conocimos de cerca
“En Bici Sin Edad”, al acompañar a Ole, Thorkild y Eila a un
paseo en un trishaw durante el segundo aniversario de En
Bici Sin Edad.
Esa experiencia nos dejó muy claro que un proyecto
de esta naturaleza tiene el gran potencial de impactar
positivamente la vida de otras personas y pensamos de
sumarnos a la intención de beneficiar a más personas
mayores, o con movilidad limitada, llevando el proyecto
a México.
En ese momento consideramos que sólo sería
financieramente factible si localmente pudiéramos
construir los triciclos similares a los modelos originales
que usa En Bici Sin Edad en Copenhaguen, puesto que ya
teníamos la experiencia de modificar y adaptar un triciclo
de carga para un proyecto de educación y promoción del
uso de la bicicleta en Cholula.
A nuestro regreso, nos dimos a la tarea de explorar
alternativas junto con nuestro joven amigo herrero,
Daniel Centeno, quien con su creatividad y dedicación logró
transformar cinco triciclos de carga en la versión mexicana
de trishaws para En Bici Sin Edad. A los esfuerzos de Daniel,
se sumó la señora Malena Jiménez quien contribuyó con el
diseño y manufactura de las capotas rojas para los triciclos.
Así fue como, usando la creatividad para librar los obstáculos,
iniciamos la primera flotilla de En Bici Sin Edad en
nuestro país.
En México, proyectos como En Bici Sin Edad nos dan la
oportunidad de reforzar el tejido social y de abrir paso al
rencuentro. Si miramos hacia el interior, todos podemos
encontrar esa naturaleza de bondad y compasión que nos
inspira a tomar acciones de beneficio para otros.
