My main focus as a researcher within mental health
promotion at the Danish National Institute of Public
Health is on identifying how we as a society can create
the best conditions to stay active, to belong, and to
commit in the arenas where we live, love, learn and play
throughout our lifespans. When I first heard about
Cycling Without Age, I thought this was a perfect
example of bringing all those things together.
Cycling Without Age enables elderly men and women,
who might otherwise have difficulties in joining
outdoor activities, to get out and about, to stay
active and participate in everyday life settings.
The friendships that occur between pilots and passengers
most likely increase the sense of belonging for all involved.
Finally, having a sense of purpose and meaning in life –
something to get out of bed for in the morning – is
increased when we actively commit to a project, set
ourselves a goal, engage in meaningful social activities
or help others. All of which Cycling Without Age enables.
Cycling Without Age makes it possible for passengers and
pilots alike to act, belong and commit – three aspects that
are crucial for mental health and well-being. I not only
find Cycling Without Age to be a heartwarming project on
a personal level, I also believe it has a great potential in
promoting mental health for all involved.

Mit primære fokus, som forsker i mental sundhedsfremme,
er at identificere, hvordan vi som samfund kan skabe de
bedste betingelser for, at vi forbliver aktive, føler at vi hører
til, og engagerer os i de sammenhænge, hvor vi lever,
lærer, arbejder og leger gennem hele livet. Da jeg hørte om
Cykling uden alder var min første tanke, at her var et perfekt
eksempel på netop at binde alle disse ting sammen.
Cykling uden alder gør det muligt for ældre mennesker,
der måske ellers kunne have svært ved at tage del i
udendørsaktiviteter, at komme ud, at forblive aktive og at
deltage i hverdagslivet.
De venskaber, der opstår mellem piloter og passagerer, øger
højst sandsynligvis følelsen af fællesskab og af at høre til
for alle parter. Endeligt øges følelsen af mening og formål –
følelsen af at have noget at stå op til om morgenen – når vi
aktivt bidrager til et projekt, sætter os selv et mål, engagerer
os i meningsfulde sociale aktiviteter og/eller hjælper andre.
Cykling uden alder gør alt dette muligt på en og samme tid.
Cykling uden alder gør det muligt for piloter og passagerer
at gøre noget aktivt, at gøre noget sammen og at gøre
noget meningsfuldt, tre ting der er afgørende for mental
sundhed og trivsel. Jeg synes ikke alene, at Cykling uden
alder er et rørende projekt på det personlige plan, jeg mener
også, at der i projektet ligger et stort potentiale i at fremme
mental sundhed og trivsel for alle involverede.
